Trees are friends of us. They give us wood, shelter, food, and oxygen. They are also a source of income when fruits and wood are sold. They help us to minimize the loss of damage while there are natural disasters. Trees are a friend of our environment. However, because of modernization and the urbanization process, trees are being cut down all over the world. It affects our environment and leads to global warming. Cutting down trees might not be a concern if people choose for plantation with the same space as it cut down. So, to save our planet, tree plantation is becoming popular. And with the view of having a safer world, ActionAid Bangladesh recently had taken the initiative of tree plantation in LRP-53, Lalmonirhat and LRP-54, Shyamnagar in October 2022.

In Lalmonirhat, 500 families got 1000 saplings of mango & wood tree and plum seeds whereas each family got a mango and a wood tree sapling along with some plum seeds. In Shyamnagar, 600 families received 1200 fruit saplings. Each of the families got tree saplings of wood apples and guava.

During the distribution of saplings, a representative from the local agricultural office was present and encouraged people for homestead gardening to have a source of nutrition supply for the family members and to create a scope of additional earnings by selling vegetables. Fatema (29), living in Shyamnagar, shared, “Shyamnagar is a disaster-prone area. I came to know that trees may help us to minimize losses in the time of natural disasters. I get saplings of guava and wood apple from ActionAid Bangladesh recently. I planted those beside the pond at our house. I take care of the plants and hope that I can earn some money by selling the fruits of these plants. Thank you, ActionAid, to start its work in Shyamnagar and help us”.
